Join CFCC in Toronto for Food Summit 2018! This annual event brings together staff from GFOs and CFCs to share ideas, make meaningful connections, and get energized for our collective work building a healthy and fair food system. This year’s theme is Power up! Food is power in so many ways: it fuels our bodies, it mobilizes our communities, and it’s what brings people together the world over. We’ll be powering up this year’s Summit with 20 dynamic workshops, powerful stories, themed meet-ups, social events, and more. A rough schedule, logistics, and ticket information are below. Across Community Food Centres, 28% of adult program participants are over the age of 65. Understanding the needs and experiences of program participants is key in developing good programs — and that is true of seniors too. In addition, seniors are often incredibly valuable volunteers — they bring years of life and work experience that they can apply to the organization, and they often have time to spare. In this workshop, we’ll talk with Christine Kapp-Bland, a board member, participant, and volunteer at The Local Community Food Centre. She’ll share her experiences of why she became engaged with the programs and what keeps her coming back. We’ll be joined by Ashrafi Ahmed, who will speak about engaging newcomer and diverse seniors in garden programs at Regent Park Community Food Centre. Together we will reflect on our existing programming and discuss ways to engage seniors more fully in our programs.
